Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on TimeDoctor.org Live

Here’s three hours of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at 720p60. I can’t believe how well MGS V has merged open-world exploration and stealth action along with X-Com style base building and each component is done better than any other similar game. Some games stagnate as sequels stack up, MGS isn’t one of them.

With every sequel Metal Gear Solid sheds its skin and becomes something new. Kojima fools us each time into thinking that this new MGS is like other sequels and to buy it in the comfort of finding something familiar. The band-aid is ripped off quicker than ever in Metal Gear Solid V, in a little more than an hour you will already be surprised and then find yourself doing similar things to what I’m doing in that video and there are still many more surprises ahead.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V launched last night on Steam and today on consoles. This is supposedly the final Metal Gear Solid game from Hideo Kojima after some discord internally at Konami who have basically done everything they can to get out of the console game business choosing instead to focus on pachinko and mobile games. The only other big game coming out of Konami after Metal Gear is soccer.

MGS V’s Windows version was to be released a few weeks after the console versions but it shipped on-time and looks great. Reviews are overall extremely positive and the PC Gamer report on the technical aspects of the Windows version is positive. The game runs very well on my machine, and the only real technical disappointment that PC Gamer failed to mention is that the companion app for tablets and phones, iDroid, will only link with the console versions of MGS V.

I stayed up until 2AM playing last night after it unlocked around 9PM Pacific. MGS 5 is just that good.

Metal Gear Solid 2’s False Hero

Richard Stanton has this great article on Metal Gear Solid 2 and how the game was itself an examination of expectations for what a sequel to Metal Gear Solid could be. Here’s a short part about the protagonist, Raiden:

Raiden was MGS2’s big secret, a character visually designed to appeal to people who didn’t play MGS – specifically women. The first game’s audience was largely male, and Kojima believed a good-looking young man would be a pleasant contrast to the gruff chain-smoking Snake.

But the true purpose was different. Before he was ever called Raiden, the character was known by the kanji (Ore) that literally translates as ‘I.’ Raiden was intended to represent the player, specifically the type of player who enjoys war-themed games like MGS. The events at the Big Shell closely parallel the events at Shadow Moses, with one big difference.

The first time you control Raiden, with his mask off and blonde locks flowing freely, the location is designed around a bespoke effect: lots of bird shit. Walk on it and Raiden pratfalls, an initially amusing animation that soon becomes a little tiresome as you search for the way forward.

It’s a little thing but, boy, do they pile up. MGS2 in ways big and small undermines Raiden at nearly every turn, constantly reinforcing to both him and the player that he is not Solid Snake. The Big Shell is Raiden’s first combat mission, and no-one misses the opportunity to remind him of it. When Snake meets Raiden he calls him “green” and “rookie.” Raiden’s first boss fight, against Fortune, cannot be won – and she taunts him for not being Snake. Where Snake stoically bore torture, Raiden ends up crying.

There’s so much more in the article. The upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5 is giving people a great excuse to write about the older games in the series and how awesomely unconventional they were.

Konami Treats Their Employees Like Shit

Brian Ashcraft has a translation of a report from Nikkei about how Konami treats their employees. Unsurprisingly, it’s awful. Your next game fails after a string of successes? You’re now demoted to scrubbing toilets, cleaning gym equipment, or making slot machines.
